4 Immune-Boosting Remedies for Adults

I already shared my favorite immune-boosting remedies for kids and now I’ll share what I take myself and recommend. Us moms need to stay healthy too! If we get sick, it can be disastrous for the whole house.

Notice I said “what I take” because trying to get my husband to take any vitamins is like pulling teeth. And then when he gets sick and comes moping around… whoops I’m going off topic.
(Happy, you can tell him I said that!)

Anyways…back to the remedies.

I take the same things as the kids, just different versions/doses. I opted to do a separate post so it wouldn’t be as long and boring.

1. Probiotics

2. Echinacea

3. Elderberry

4. Vitamin D


Probiotics are the good bacteria you find in the yogurt. I take a supplement versus yogurt because I don’t eat a lot of dairy products plus I get a greater variety taking the supplement. There are many options and types of probiotics. I’ve tried a couple and have settled on the iFlora brand. I used to be somewhat lactose intolerant and now after a couple months on these, I can stomach dairy much better.

I take 2 probiotics a day. Not for “regularity” but because it really does help my immune system. When my children had the stomach flu last week, I didn’t get it. I’d say that’s a pretty good test as to how effective probiotics can be!


Echinacea is said to “stimulate and strengthen” the immune system so that many times you won’t even get sick or if you do, it will be much milder and easier to recover from.

I take 1 capsule twice a day. You can get echinacea from any Walmart, Target, or drugstore, but I buy mine online because it’s cheaper.  My favorite place to get echinacea is Puritan’s Pride – they have great 2 for 1 deals all the time.


Elderberry is an amazing antioxidant that is great for treating respiratory symptoms. If I get the slightest hint of a sniffle or I know I’ve been exposed to something, I take elderberry.

Elderberry is a little harder to find in stores, so you may have to look at a health food store or buy online like I do.


Vitamin D is my #1 vitamin in my cupboard. If I had to choose just one supplement, it would definitely be Vitamin D3. From potentially helping with depression to improving bone health and possibly even helping prevent cancer, Vitamin D has amazing potential. And that’s not even getting started on how great it is for the immune system.

Simply put, our bodies need Vitamin D for us to be at our best. If we don’t get it, our bodies will not function as well and that includes our immune system. This especially goes for people in northern climates during the winter when we don’t get as much natural Vitamin D from sunshine.

Three years ago when I was pregnant with Joshua, I was depressed, tired, and constantly getting sick. My doctor did a blood test and found that I was very deficient in Vitamin D. I was prescribed a high dose of Vitamin D and within a couple days I felt like a new person. I had more energy, I didn’t feel as down, and I stayed healthy. Ever since then, at the recommendation of my doctor, I take extra Vitamin D.

During the winter, I take between 5,000 and 10,000 IUI a day. In the summer I take less because I’m out in the sun. It may seem like a lot, but that’s the level that helps me stay at my best and doctor-approved. Check with your doctor, do your own research, but I can tell you from what my doctor told me and what I’ve researched myself, it’s pretty hard to reach toxic levels of Vitamin D and you are much more likely to be deficient than to take too much.

I used to get the “winter blues” so badly that I would almost resort to medication. Ever since I started taking Vitamin D, I haven’t been depressed like that again. That’s been 3 much-improved winters with Vitamin D.

I get my Vitamin D online because I get the higher doses at a better price.


So there you have my 4 favorite remedies for immune-boosting power for moms. Taking those and getting my rest keep me healthy. And yes, I did have a cold last week, but I know I caught it because I was staying up too late and not getting enough sleep. So my own fault. I can only ask so much of my body, right?

  4. I remember my room before was like a mini pharmacy with all these Puritan Pride supplements that never cured my TMAU odors. I sure need some probiotics, echinacea and vitamin D but then I don’t know of any affordable brand with no soy lecithin and dicalcium phosphate in the ingredients list.
